Absolutely love this series!WHY WE LOVE IT--The characters are well developed and engaging for children (and adults)! You will fall in love with Seymour, his cat, Olive (the ghost), and even Mr. Grumply (the washed up writer).--The story is so fun! There is mystery,action, emotion, and suspense. It all comes together well!--It is mixed media (so it is written through letters, newspaper clippings, emails, even the beginning pages of a novel). I read this aloud to my daughter, and we really like looking at all the different types of communication together. (We started this series when she was 6. If a child were reading it alone, I might recommend a bit older, maybe 8+ because of the complexity of the writing.)LIGHT WARNING--There is talk of ghosts, but this was positive and fun (not scary).--There is one intense scene with a chandelier (but my child wasn't really bothered by it). They address it with empathy later.--The ending is a little intense with suspense about the outcome. My child was worried (and a bit upset for a moment), but we both found the end highly satisfying!!!OTHER BOOKS in the SERIES--We also read book 2 in the series. It was just as fun as the first!--We're looking forward to book 3.
I discovered these books at a book store at Peddlers Village in PA and purchased the first one in the series.After reading the first book I quickly went onto Amazon and ordered all the other books in the series.What a cute storyline and I have to admit, I am a 43 year old women and loved the books. They brought me backto my childhood and would recommend them to any person of any age. If you want a light and fun read these bookswill make you smile. I have grown quite attached to Mr. Grumpley, Seymour and Miss Olive!
After reading Book One of 43 Old Cemetery Road, you may have been left thinking something like, "Um, a young child living in an old house with a ghost and a cranky old writer - is that even legal?" Well, this installment of the series, with characteristic epistolary humor, sets off to answer that question.It seems that some anonymous busybody has gone and informed Dick Tater of the International Movement for the Safety & Protection of our Kids & Youth (IMSPOOKY) about 11-year-old Seymour Hope living with writer I.B. Grumply. Grumply blithely informs Tater that he "acquired" the boy through an odd clause in his rental agreement and that Olive C. Spence is a wonderful mother. The only problems are that you can't legally acquire a child through a rental agreement and that Olive C. Spence has been dead for a while.Dick Tater sets off to investigate, which just might hamper efforts to publish the next three-chapter installment of "43 Old Cemetery Road", the book that Olive and Iggy are co-writing and which Seymour is illustrating. Things get especially inconvenient when Tater commits Iggy to the Illinois Home for the Deranged and places Seymour in the Ghastly Orphanage pending his parents (the ones who abandoned him at 43 Old Cemetery Road in the first place) picking him up. Will Iggy escape and rescue Seymour? Will Seymour's parents succeed with their new book, "Only Fools (and Children) Believe in Ghosts"? Will Olive manage to turn up her old manuscripts to publish in lieu of 43 Old Cemetery Road? Will readers revolt and demand their money back? And will Dick Tater successfully cancel Halloween?With characteristically humorous twists and turns, the three housemates manage, as usual, to put everything right in delightfully clever style. The characters, even the dead one, really come to life in this book and, of course, they are joined by a new cast of aptly named co-stars: Fay Tality, president of the Bank of Ghastly, Shirley U. Jest, owner of the Ghastly Gourmand; Ike N. Openitt, locksmith; and Mac Awbrah, owner of Ghastly Antiques.As usual, the story is told through a series of letters between and among the characters, as well as newspaper articles and other documentation. Seymour provides many of the illustrations, along with illustrations in the newspapers and a few from Olive herself.I actually stumbled on Book Four of this series first and liked it enough to begin at the beginning. This book was no disappointment. It will appeal to precocious younger readers, reluctant older readers, and pretty much all other readers, children and adults alike.
My 9 yr. old daughter just loved this book and the first one. She's waiting for the next one to come in a couple more months and it's driving her crazy to have to wait so long. She loved them so much she read them each in 2 days. She was so sad when she finished because she wanted more pages to read! They are really fun books, I read them after her and it was really fun to talk with her about them afterwards. We highly recommend these!
This is one of the 5 in a series of books by Klise and her sister. I loved them all. Picked one up on a casual browse and purchased all the others. I loved the writing, pictures, and more. They were fun to read. At 66, very entertaining!
Kids love this series and I was able to pick this book up on amazon clearance for $2.53, what a steal!. everyone is happy and reading the summer away. Kate- keep the series going... your readers love it!
This is a "GO TO" series for my students when they do not know what to read next. My class loved the first one when it was a Sunshine State Reader
