Tremendous read for any seasoned blues fan, casual blues listener, or anyone interested in Southern history. I take online harmonica lessons from Adam Gussow, and it's clear through this book that Mr. Gussow is not simply a skilled harmonicist, but also a true master of the blues tradition. I definitely suggest listening to all of the songs as they are mentioned, it helps the reader get in the zone and more fully grasp the message.
Very scholarly. More information than some folks may want. The final chapter concerning tourism and the Crossroads sign is a good guide for any Chamber of Commerce.

A very well written, well researched book.
Fast exchange and the book was great
My favorite part of the book was a large section devoted to the "Lives and Legacies of Robert Johnson". Like other blues enthusiasts I have absorbed a lot about Robert Johnson, but this book examines Robert and the crossroads legend further, with facts and analysis that put it all in perspective. The story of the later branding of a crossroads by the city of Clarksdale, Mississippi and the promotion of the legend by others is very interesting.The key word in the book title is "beyond", as the book takes you beyond the legends, digging deep into the blues culture, lyrics, songs, and the life of blues musicians. It also travels beyond the early blues time period following the ripples into current blues perceptions, musicians, and promotion. Well-written.
