The padded cover and the artwork are beautiful. The most interesting and intellectual part of the book is the lengthy, well written introduction about women and literacy since ancient times. I found the commentaries about each painting to be more lackluster and also sometimes pointing out the obvious, which was that the female subject was reading. All in all, a very nice book. I bought a high quality used copy at a low price.

First, no book-loving woman can pass up that title! I was given the book as a gift, and then sent another copy on to a friend. I'm not letting go of my copy. Second, it was crammed-full of art, essays and facts that linked to each other, reinforcing the splendid title. I have another friend in mind who would love this for her birthday.

It is a wonderful book, with beautiful paintings of women reading and related stories. It has a lot of history and interesting information. I had a library copy but wanted my own to really spend some time with it. I am planning to make it a gift to my sister who is sure to love it to.

This book intrigued me with its title, and surprised me most positively with its content. Art and thought combined. I have given it as gifts to three friends.
