I was a huge Castle fan. Even more so a fan of Nathan Fillion. So when the Richard Castle books came out, I was so excited.Deadly Storm is our introduction to PI Derrick Storm. He is very much like the Castle character on the TV show. Smart, creative, impulsive, charming, and a bit of an idiot. He gets himself caught up in a case which brings him in touch with CIA operative Clara Strike. Their partnership in this adventure is comical.I'm not into comic books, which is why this got 4 stars instead of 5. But I enjoyed the story. I laughed many times over the stupid things Storm said. A lot of the dialog is cheesy, but still awesome. I look forward to reading the next installment.
Richard castle: Deadly Storm (a Derrick Storm Mystery)Publisher: MarvelStory and art by: Brian Michael Bendis, Kelly Sue Deconnick, Lan MedinaGraphic Novel. Hardcover editionBlurb: CASTLE fans rejoice! For the first time anywhere, CASTLE's titular hero Derrick Storm comes to life in the pages of this all-new graphic novel. This "adaptation" of Derrick Storm's first novel adventure takes our hero from the gritty world of the private eye all the way to the globe-hopping intrigue of the CIA. Eisner Award-winning Marvel Architect Brian Bendis and red hot Osborn writer Kelly Sue DeConnick worked closely with CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe to create the one thing millions of CASTLE fans have been asking for: Their first real Derrick Storm adventure. A wall-to-wall, gritty, witty, globe-hopping detective thrill ride for fans of the hit TV show starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, as well as fans of darn good comic books.I'm not a major graphic novel reader. This is my second (first was 30 days of night). As a fan of the hit ABC series, I have bought two of the Richard Castle novels, Heat Wave and Heat Rises. The TV series mentions Derrick Storm on several occasions. So, I thought why not grab a copy and give it a read. And I'm glad I did. It was better than the 'Heat' books and it moved at a much faster pace. Derrick Storm is a PI who gets hired by the CIA to track down an ex-CIA agent. A 'person of interest' that he was currently investigating of behalf of this agent's wife.Things are not as they seem in this graphic novel as they are with all episodes of Castle. There are twists, turns and double dealing (better than Castle). There are a few confusing spots in the storyline and there are a few pages were Derrick Storm doesn't look anything like the Derrick Storm on other pages, especially hair colour and facial shape. In a graphic novel it is not just the story that counts, it's the details in the images as we need these to put two and two together and get five.Overall, the story is pretty good and entertaining (as a story should be).
I readily admit to being a die-hard Castle fan, and I'll buy anything that comes out with Castle's name on it. The story was about what I expected from a Richard Castle plot - a little over the top, kind of goofy, and doesn't take itself very seriously, but still well-written and entertaining. The art, not surprisingly, was flawless; I wouldn't expect less from Brian Michael Bendis. I'd love to see more of the Derrick Storm novels come out, whether in text or in graphic novel form.
It took a bit to get into the flow of this story but it was interesting. This was my first story i read about Derrick Storm but I'm certainly interested in checking out some of the others.
Bought as a gift for my hubby for Christmas, and he loved it! Funny thing is he got me the same thing! We both loved it :)
I read the second Storm graphic novel first (oops) and really enjoyed it. This one felt too crude and trashy to me. I guess that may not be too shocking, but it seemed a bit unnecessary. Still, it was nice to see the stage set (or re-set, since the graphic novels are supposed to be adaptations of the original books) for the character that (sort of) "launched" Richard Castle fictitious career.
I'm a huge Castle fan and I couldn't wait to read this graphic novel. Derrick Storm is an entertaining character who perhaps is a little over the top but aren't we all sometimes. In the TV show, the Clara Strike character was based on a CIA agent who was recently played by Jennifer Beals, and of course Rick based the Derrick Storm character on himself although he's never been a cop or a CIA agent. Just a writer as his protective vest indicates. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I am looking forward to reading more Richard Castle novels and graphic novels.Peter Moore - Author of Copyright and Skip-Trace
