This is a wonderful introduction to the main perspectives on free will. It would be perfect for an introductory course in Philosophy at the undergrad level. It makes seemingly complicated ideas clear and simple. Its main focus is an examination of whether certain experimental results in Psychology and Neuroscience, such as Libet's, undermine free will. Mele does a good job showing the mistakes people have made in interpreting these results, and the limitations of such scientific claims. The one star review below is meant to be a criticism of Sam Harris' 'Free Will' book. While it is a fair comment on that belligerent little book, it should be removed from here, since it is not about Mele's book.
A solid introduction to current supposed scientific challenges to the existence of free will. Written as a dialogue to be attractive to students. I think this book is successful at what it sets out to do, but I personally prefer Mele's "Free Will" which covers the same material, for cheaper, in a clearer and more accessible way. Both books are great and appropriate for undergraduates.
Professor Mele is admittedly pro free will so his opinion is biased from the start. His career depends on it. He was given a $4 million grant by the Templeton Foundation to explore current thinking about free will and concluded nothing new...except he is a lot richer now. One can make a good case for God's will trumping human free will from Bible scriptures but that would scare everyone away from church so you will not get that view from organized religion....if you want a short summary request one by emailing lewtag@aol.com as space does not permit it here. After 2,000 years there still is no consensus on this issue. The stakes are extremely high. If there is no free will then the whole corpus of Christianity is void and the world system of jurisprudence is moot and the whole basis for society crumbles like a shack in a hurricane or earthquake. There is another view but to see this view would be like staring at the sun. So it follows that only extreme reasoning could support the demise of free will. However, that is exactly the position of theofatalism...belief that nothing happens outside the will of God...not the manmade god of holy books but the prime mover in the universe...generator, operator, destroyer....GOD...it does whatever it wants with whomever it wants from atoms to galaxies and sheeple all must take what it gives and give what it takes...according to Mother Teresa. Ergo theofatalism...so this work should be taken for what it is...continuation of the status quo...the bottom line of course is not the issue of free will or not because those who believe either way must be doing the will of God as there can be no other...get it? Google for details...theofatalism...and read all about it....Theofatalism: Theology for Agnostics and Atheists
