Loved the plot twists and turns. Truly fascinating that several key players were confused as to who killed Jack's ex-girlfriend. I was partner to the confusion as I followed the read - flipping from one character to the other.Written at a comfortable place, the reader journeys through character "mini - stories" that provide a deeper understanding of the main character's role in this riveting murder mystery. Well written and highly recommended.
Viatical Settlements: A terminally ill patient signs his life insurance benefits over to a group of investors; in exchange, the investors pay an immediate lump-sum cash settlement to the patient, usually about one-half of the value of the policy. The patient gets the money now, and the investors get the full value of the policy at the patient's death, thus doubling their investment.I never heard of viatical settlements either, until I read "Beyond Suspicion" by James Grippando. Jack Swyteck unwisely, as it turns out, decides to represent a former lover in her case against an investment company who bought her policy when she was diagnosed with a terminal disease (ALS), and now wants the money back because it turns out she doesn't have ALS and she isn't going to die anytime soon. Jack wins the case for her, and almost immediately begins to discover that the whole thing might have been a big fraud. That's a great plot twist, and there are plenty more in store for the reader. Things are never what they seem to be, and Jack finds himself dealing with bigger problems than just an angry group of investors. For starters, he is immediatley implicated in the fraud case, and in the process is alienated from his wife, because it looks like he was in it with his former lover. And it just keeps on getting better.I've always enjoyed James Grippando's works, and I think this is one of his best!
Old girlfriend Jessie Merrill has scammed Miami lawyer Jack Swyteck by claiming to have ALS, a fatal disease. She sold her $3 mil life insurance policy to some investors for $1.5 mil – 100% profit for them when she dies. One problem – she doesn’t have ALS. Now she is claiming that Jack knew about the scam when defending her against the investors. But all of a sudden the situation turns from fraud to murder or suicide. She turns up dead in Jack’s bathtub. From here this story goes completely off the rails. We have Russian mafia types who are buying and selling AIDs infected blood. His wife Cindy is making his life miserable with her dreams. And Jack is trying to keep from being indicted for murder. This book is simply one big mishmash. Following the hodgepodge of threads is not so much difficult as just boring. None of it rings true.
Very good read. The plot and the subplots mingled well, I liked the character, who were well-drawn, and the ending was a complete surprise. I don't rate books well that are something of a pain to stay with but which compel me to do so because I want to know what happened. That kind of book does not make an evening go down well. This book is a pleasant read even though the tension is there throughout. The only thing I did not like is a frequent complaint these days. A bad guy--I won't say why because that would give too good a clue--is a church-going Christian, obviously an evangelical, who does very bad things in his secret life. Being a retired preacher, I have known a few of those in my life, but it seem to be a too-easy caricature. As often as this is done in all kinds of media these days, it projects an unfair image of evangelicals, and it has become so trite that it reduces the quality of the story. I suspect a lot of people out there agree on this. But still, I strongly recommend the book.
I was reading John Grisham, finding myself unable to complete "The Testament" when a friend recommended James Grippando. JG claims (Kindle review pages) that the ending will knock your socks off so this is the first of his books I have read. The pace is fabulous, varying between express and quick, the story tightly contained. This is the sort of stuff that executives at Universal Studios like: a crime thriller, a very focussed story, stakes that multiply, a likeable character in deep jeopardy whose situation keeps getting worse, a jaw-dropping inciting incident and a nice climax. Only the characters are not complex or convoluted and the climax is "nice" but not as awesome as claimed. There is a marginal dose of intellectualisation as with any legal thriller but the forays into Jack's wife's troubled past did not work for me--it was as if the author was trying to make her more human and all it did was lessen the pace. Her past does have a context, however, which is clear in the end so I am not complaining. All in all, the pluses outweigh the minuses by a lot; rivetting stuff.
Couldn’t put the book down. Cops and robbers - of the foreign frightening variety, drugs, hatred, jealousy and a little love on the rocks thrown in, all make for one enjoyable read. Don’t miss this book. It’s a page-turner!
I read and enjoyed THE PARDON so it was on to BEYOND SUSPICION, James Grippando's second Jack Swyteck book. Glad I did. The story has a simple premise and it gets so twisted and good. The book is fast moving and really interesting. Swyteck gets drawn into a deep mystery and it gets harder and harder to escape. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
A good read. 17 more words needed. Writing this is a pain in the bottom of my coccyx. Is it not enuff that I gave it 5 well deserved stars..?
